He argues that at birth the mind is a tabula rasa, or blank slate, that humans fill with ideas as they experience the world through the five senses. Locke defines knowledge as the connection and agreement, or disagreement and repugnancy, of the ideas humans form. From this definition it follows that our knowledge does not extend beyond the scope of human ideas. In fact, it would mean that our knowledge is even narrower than this description implies, because the connection between most simple human ideas is unknown. Because ideas are limited by experience, and we cannot possibly experience everything that exists in the world, our knowledge is further compromised. However, Locke asserts that though our knowledge is necessarily limited in these ways, we can still be certain of some things. For example, we have an intuitive and immediate knowledge of our own existence, even if we are ignorant of the metaphysical essence of our souls. We also have a demonstrative knowledge of God’s existence, though our understanding cannot fully comprehend who or what he is. We know other things through sensation. We know that our ideas correspond to external realities because the mind cannot invent such things without experience. A blind man, for example, would not be able to form a concept of colour. (Sheldon) Most parents have had this experience with their child at some point, and at the time the parent may feel like their child will never grow out of this. There are things parents can teach their child to make these situations become less frequent. Parents should teach their child how to deal with these situations, and respond with a better reaction, which comes from self-control. However, sometimes parents can fail at teaching their child these important skills and values because they are more concerned about being their childs friend, and not being their parent which can lead them into influencing their child in the wrong ways. Even though sometimes parents can influence their children in the wrong ways , one of the most important skills and values parents can teach their children is self control because having self-control can lead to better social skills, and money management skills, and with having these skills and values will lead the child to a more successful life. In todays society more and more parents are becoming more concerned about being their childs friend then parenting them.Teaching self-control has become a big focus for early childhood education. (Shute) Parents need to focus on teaching their children these skills and values in the childs younger years. With failure to teach their children these skills when they are younger can cause the child to have a more difficult future. Parents need to step up and stop trying to be friends with their children when they are younger, in order to teach their kids the skills that will mold their future. When parents have the wrong attitude toward their child, their negativity can play a big role with the influences the parent has on them. The informal education that the family provides for their children makes more of an impact on a childs total education than the formal education system (Northrup) Parents are the childs first teachers, and if parents fail to teach important skills to their child, it could possibly affect their childs future. Having a caring parent in a childs life is one of the strongest influences towards the child having a successful life.(Northrup) If parents fail at this, their child will suffer in the long run because of the lack of the strong positive influences they need from their parents. A new study says that self-control makes the difference between getting a good job or going to jail, and we learn it in preschool. (Shute) Parents desperately need to be a part of their childs life, teaching them the important skills and values that will shape the rest of their life. Children need their parents to be there for them and teach them the skills and values needed, so they can have a successful life. Even though parents can influence their children in the wrong ways, one of the most important skills and values any parent can teach their children is self control. Having self control can lead to better social skills and money management skills. Self control is something that needs to start being taught at a young age. By learning self-control, kids can make appropriate decisions and respond to stressful situations in ways that can yield positive outcomes (Tyna). When kids learn this at younger age, it will only benefit them in the years to come. They will be able to make better decisions, and respond to difficult situations in a way that will help them gain a better and brighter future. For example, if you say that youre not serving ice cream until after dinner, your child may cry, plead, or even scream in the hopes that you will give in.(Tyna) With self control, the child can see that throwing a huge fit will only get the ice cream taken away, but if they wait patiently without ha ving a temper tantrum, they will get their ice cream. Children look to their parents to learn these important skills, so when children looks to their parents for social skills, the parents need to be a positive influence. With self control, parents will see their child stand out with their social skills among other children, and they will be able to use these social skills in whatever they do in their future. Along with having better social skills, children with self control will also make wiser money management decisions. In addition to providing for their childrens immediate needs, parents need to provide for their childrens future temporal needs by teaching them to be financially independent adults.(Sheldon) Teaching your child how to manage money will only benefit them later in life. Parents, who teach their child how important managing money is and how to manage it, will have great success in their adult years. If children learn to make smarter money decisions now, they will take that with them the rest of their lives. Teaching children money-management skills takes practice and patience. Both parents and children will have to make adjustments and correct themselves when they make mistakes. (Sheldon) It will take time and patience for both the parent and child when they are learning the importance of money and how to handle money. Learning about how to manage money can start as young as the age of 3 years old.(Sheldon) It is never too early for parents to start teaching their child. So, whenever kids start asking and wondering about money, it is a good time to start teaching them about the importance of making wise money decisions. With self control by learning the basics first, it then allows learning more skills because of the presence have self control. So, parents need to start teaching their child these important skills and values at a young age. First, having self control can lead to better social skills and money management skills, but most importantly, having these skills and values will lead to better success later in life. Women's sports used to be played by a slow defensive style. Today, the sports are played with speed, precision, and power. With these changes have come increased injuries, and female athletes have higher injury rates than men in many sports. Knee injuries have been rising in female sports. Anterior crutiate ligament (ACL) injuries have become the most common injury in the knee to female athletes. Females are four times more susceptible to injury then men.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The ACL is a dynamic structure whose main function is to provide primary restraint to anterior tibial subluxation. It provides secondary restraint limiting internal rotation and restraint with the knee in full extension. Along with the posterior crutiate ligament, it provides the axis for knee rotation and links rotation with flexion and extension.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The ligament is primarily made up of two bands, the anteromedial and posterolateral, and an intermediate band sometimes present. The ACL runs from the posteromedial portion of the lateral femoral condyle in an inferior, anterior, and medial orientation to an area just lateral to the medial tibial eminence. The posterolateral band is tightest when the knee is in extension, and the anteromedial band is tightest with the knee in flexion.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The majority of ACL injuries suffered during athletic participation are of the noncontact variety. Three main noncontact mechanisms have been identified planting and cutting, straight-knee landing and one-step stop landing with the knee hyperextended. Basketball, soccer, and volleyball consistently produce some of the highest ACL injury rates across various age groups. Many injuries have occurred during the first 30 minutes of play. One-reason physicians are seeing more ACL injuries in female patients that more women play sports, and they play more intensely. Infectious Disease What is the stake of the American People and the Government by International Agencies to control Infectious Disease in Developing Countries? More people are at risk of infectious diseases than at any other time on history. Infectious diseases are worldwide problem requiring worldwide attention. Infectious diseases can weaken the strength of a nation's resources. In developing nations this poses even a greater threat. Diseases are threatening the economic stability of many developing nations. 50,000 people die everyday from infectious disease. Rift Valley Fever infects both livestock and humans. Rift Valley Fever is most commonly found in regions of eastern and southern Africa. It also exists in Madagascar and sub-Saharan Africa. The Bunyaviridae family includes the Rift Valley Fever disease. It is primarily spread from infected mosquitoes, who then infect animals. Generally they infect domestic animals, such as buffalo, cattle, sheep, camels and goats. Once the livestock are infected, other mosquitoes can spread the disease. It is also possible that the infection can be spread from other biting insects. The Rift Valley Fever outberak of 1997-1998 in eastern Africa killed both humans and livestock. It economically hurt trase in animals and the dairy indusrty.. the economy was crushed by trade imbargoes. Humans can get Rift Valley Fever in numerous ways. Humans can be infected from the mosquitoes or the bodily fluids of the infected animal. Contact such as slaughtering the infected animal can occur also. Symptoms include, an infuenza like illness, fever, liver abnormalities, muscle and back pain and vomitting. In the early stages of Rift Valley Fever, these symptoms are some times mistaken for meningitis. This fever may also perceive itself to be haemorrhagic fever. Fatalities occur mostly in patients who have developed haemorrhagic fever. In diagnosing Rift Valley Fever, tests have demostrated the presence of antibodies to the disease. Studies in animals have given antiviral drugs for the use of humans. Herdsman and animal workers in areas where Rift Valley Fever is present are at a greater risk of being infected. The risk of transmission can be reduced by, wearing gloves, insect repellent, the use of protective clothes, and avoiding outdoor activity during peak biting times. Surveillance is important to form effective measures for reducing the number of infections. Cholera is a diarrheal illness that is spread by contaminated water and food. It is caused by an infection of the intestine, and in many cases it can be very severe.

What is the setting and social context of the poem? The setting and social context of this poem is in America in the mid 90’s when the war in the Far East was going on as it is stated in the poem. It takes place in her home or apartment or wherever she stays. She is living with her mom because her mom orders her to sweep the floor. 3. Does the poem demonstrate a rhyme scheme? If so, what is it? The poem doesn’t really demonstrate a rhyme scheme. It is written in a pretty straight forward matter. 4. Point out any similes that you find in the poem. How do they contribute to the overall meaning of the poem? There are several similes present in the poem. One is when her mother says she wants to be able to eat dinner off that table. She was implying to her daughter that the floor was dirty and that it needed to be clean. It was indirectly said. Another simile is when it says, â€Å"Her floor was as immaculate as a just washed dinner plate† (Line 13). This implied that she had cleaned the floor so good that it was as cl ean as a clean dinner plate. Another simile was when it said, â€Å"I watched a dozen of them die- as if their dust fell through the screen† (Line 29). This implied that the violence that she was witnessing on television was so brutal and affected her that she felt that she had to clean harder. To get rid of the fallen dust that she imagined. All these contributed to the overall meaning of the poem because it makes you be able to vision some of the scenes and events that can be hard to understand if they weren’t written in that way. 5. Point out any metaphors that you find in the poem. How do they contribute to the overall meaning of the poem? The metaphors that were in the poem were the same as the similes. They contribute to the overall meaning of the poem because without metaphors one would not be hooked to what they are reading. Trying to imagine what the author is talking about is crucial when writing poetry, as it is usually a short piece and small instances of events that happen. 6. Point out any instances of personification that you find in the poem. How do they contribute to the overall meaning of the poem? The only instance of personification that I can find in this poem is when her mom inspects the work and says that she did a good job. Her exact words were â€Å"That’s beautiful†. There is not much personification in this poem otherwise. Personification contributes to the overall meaning of the poem because when you are referencing someone or something that is of importance it is important to tie that to something else that resembles that importance. 7. Point out any imagery that you find in the poem. How do they contribute to the overall meaning of the poem? There are many examples of imagery in the poem. When referencing to the war and how she swept harder and faster after imaging the soldiers dead ashes coming through her TV screen. Much of the imagery found in the poem was the same that was found in the simile and metaphor. They contribute to the overall meaning of the poem because without imagery one could not relate to a poem. It would be very difficult. With so many examples of imagery in this poem I was really able to imagine the outcome and overall meaning of the poem. 8. What is the significance of the person who is speaking? The speaker in the poem is the author. It is written in first person. I think the fact that the speaker is the author makes it more real and personable. The story is probably something that the author experienced first hand. It makes it harder to write about someone or something when you haven’t experienced it first hand. 10. What is your personal reaction to what happens in the poem? My personal reaction to what happens in the poem is good. I think she learned a lesson of hard work and doing what you are told.
